The first desalination systems were developed in the 1940s. The technology has been advanced steadily since then, and now three main types: multi-stage flash, multi-effect distillation and reverse osmosis are in active use.

In the multi-stage flash (MSF) process, seawater is heated and evaporated repeatedly, and the steam is condensed to produce desalinated water. This method is used in about half the world's desalination plants, particularly when the plants are high-capacity.

The multi-effect distillation (MED) method is similar to multi-flash effect: hot steam passes through a tube. Sea water is sprayed on the outside of the tube and is turned to steam. The process occurs in a progression of stages (effects).
